Summary
DescriptionDevelopmental Model of Polymathy.jpg |
English: The developmental model of polymathy (DMP) organizes the elements involved in the process of polymathy development into a structure of relationships that is wed to the approach of polymathy as a life project and provide a basis for an articulation with other well-developed constructs, theories and models, especially from the fields of giftedness and education. The model has five major components: (1) polymathic antecedents, (2) polymathic mediators, (3) polymathic achievements, (4) intrapersonal moderators, and (5) environmental moderators. At the center of the model, the first three components (polymathic antecedents, polymathic mediators and polymathic achievements) configure the polymathic path. The polymathic path refers to a sequence of three stages in which a person is expected to go through during their developmental process. The first stage, polymathic antecedents, refers to personality characteristics, aptitudes, and behavioral tendencies that are primordial elements in a polymathic life project. The second stage, polymathic mediators, refers to stores of mathemata and procedural skills that are acquired and developed along a person’s life; they are pivotal for one’s progress toward polymathic goals. The third stage, polymathic achievements, refers to attainments and outcomes that represent the pinnacle of the polymathic development; they include valuable personal achievements as well as the generation of valuable contributions to society. It is important to note that, although the elements of each stage are organized in a sequential order, feedback effects among them are expected. These effects are not shown in the model’s figure for the sake of parsimony. |
