Summary
DescriptionElectrostatic induction experiment.png
English: Woodcut of experiment demonstrating electrostatic induction, from an 1872 physics text. The positive output terminal of an electrostatic machine at right is placed near one end of a sausage shaped brass cylinder on an insulating stand, at left. The positive charge from the machine induces charges in the ends of the cylinder The pairs of pith balls hanging on linen threads from the bottom of the cylinder are crude electroscopes; they give a rough measurement of how strong the charge is at each point by how wide apart they spread. They show that the charge is concentrated at both ends of the cylinder. Alterations to image: removed figure number, increased brightness slightly, converted to 32 color PNG.
