Summary

Description
English: Scheme of an ancient Roman Trispastos crane ("Three-pulley-crane"). Being the simplest Roman crane, the Trispastos consisted of a single-beam jib, a winch, a rope, and a block containing three pulleys. Having thus a mechanical advantage of 12:1, a single person working the winch could raise loads of 1800 N (3 pulleys x 600 N), assuming that 150 N represents the maximum effort that person can exert (over a longer time period).
